CIS site coordinators are our frontline defense in the battle against chronic absenteeism.

Communities In Schools offers a unique solution to combat chronic absenteeism through a trained, caring adult—sometimes referred to as a site coordinator. Across the U.S., many barriers affect students' ability to be present in school, and those challenges vary depending on the individual student and the community in which they live.

CIS site coordinators are finding solutions to those challenges, working in schools to make the connections for students to thrive.

What Is a Site Coordinator?

Site coordinators work daily inside CIS partner schools to implement the CIS model of integrated student supports. They partner with parents, educators, community-based organizations, and school and district leaders every day. Together, this network of support motivates and encourages students to stay on a path to graduation and to achieve in life.

Supporting Student Success

We know that having a connection to a caring adult is critical to keeping a student engaged in school. CIS site coordinators take the time to understand each student's unique needs and challenges and then work with them to set goals and track their progress during regular check-ins. They celebrate their student's wins and encourage them to keep going if, at first, they don't succeed.

The Push is a short film that follows the inspirational relationship between Darrell Smith, a caring CIS site coordinator, and Ja-Mez, who is about to graduate from high school full of self-confidence and with the promise of a bright future — an event that seemed impossible just two years earlier. The moving film provides an inside look at one of the many stories unfolding in thousands of CIS schools across America.

Supporting Schoolwide Success

Through implementation of our evidence-based model, CIS not only supports individual students but we support the entire school. CIS site coordinators are experts in building strong relationships. They collaborate closely with administrators and educators to establish strong connections between students and their families, making them pivotal figures in schools. They also support creating school environments where all school faculty, students, and families feel safe and welcome.

“The school received tons of positive feedback from parents. Students are excited to attend school so they can be in the attendance class of the month. In fact, they hold their parents accountable to make sure they get them to school on time.”

Milexy: Giving Back to the Community

When I was a sophomore I joined Communities In Schools (CIS) not knowing that this decision would change my next three years in high school. I am a shy and introverted person. I don't usually talk to people much but volunteering with many people and going and seeing many places helped me with my shyness so I could make new friendships.
