Reed Hartley
Vice President, Advancement
Reed Hartley is the Vice President of Advancement for Communities in Schools® (CIS®), national office based in Arlington, VA. He brings over three decades of experience in corporate partnerships, major gifts and fundraising strategies to the teams he leads.
He is an accomplished executive with a successful record of building, transforming and leading teams in non-profit and for-profit environments. Reed has repeated success growing domestic and international organizations, employing an integrated approach that includes strategic planning, effective communications, and robust partnerships to drive performance.
Reed provides strategic direction for CIS' Advancement organization in his current role. He leads the Individual, Corporate and Foundation teams, providing oversight of private fundraising efforts and enterprise-wide campaigns. A consensus builder, Reed unites organizations by fostering a culture of collaboration and thought leadership to achieve partner objectives for the greater good. He designs campaigns and programs that deepen the engagement of corporate and foundation partners, individual donors, volunteers, and advocates.
Recently, he led one of 23 regions for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which collectively raised over $1B annually. Under his leadership, market leaders achieved dramatic revenue growth in various fundraising programs. Prior to St. Jude, he led a major gift fundraising team for Opportunity International, which provides microloans to women in Africa, Asia and Latin America to work their way out of poverty and provide for their children.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Hartley spent 15 years as a sales leader, where the organizations he led achieved revenue targets upwards of $240M in the legal services industry. They worked with the AM Law 100 and corporate general counsels on complex, multi-jurisdictional cases. Reed designed the organization's best practices, led all recruiting, and collaborated in the creation and execution of new revenue acquisition programs through advertising campaigns and direct sales programs.
Reed has a Foreign Affairs and Latin American Studies degree from the University of Virginia. He lived in Mexico as a Rotary International exchange student in high school. Reed and his wife, Pat, live in Virginia and have four grown children.
