Joaquin Tamayo

For over 25 years, Joaquin Tamayo has dedicated his career to supporting the remarkable potential of students and the tireless dedication of educators across America. His journey from a Los Angeles classroom to Vice President for Policy at Communities in Schools reflects a steadfast commitment to amplifying the voices and needs of those at the heart of education.

In the Obama Administration, Joaquin co-led the Every Student, Every Day initiative, addressing chronic absenteeism and helping millions of students overcome barriers to attendance. His work in the Biden-Harris Administration, as chief of staff and senior advisor to the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education, further expanded opportunities for students through programs like the National Partnership for Student Success, YOU Belong in STEM, and the first-ever National STEM Festival, celebrating the diversity and talent in America's classrooms.

As Co-Founder of Teach Kindness, Joaquin helped create the Middle School Kindness Challenge, which supports teachers in building positive school cultures. Joaquin's leadership of and contributions to the Science of Learning and Development Alliance have been instrumental in bringing educators' insights and students' needs to the forefront of policy discussions.

In his current role at Communities in Schools, Joaquin champions the vital role of integrated student supports in whole-child education policy, recognizing the holistic needs of students and the critical role of educators in addressing them. Joaquin’s efforts in policy and practice are driven by a simple belief: with the right support and a smart strategy, every student can achieve greatness, and every educator can transform lives.
