Milexy: Giving Back to the Community
Milexy is a 2024 graduate with a bright future ahead of her with plans to go to Angelina College to study business. She reflects on lessons learned and the important role that Site Coordinator Dolores Pérez from Communities In Schools® (CIS®) of East Texas played as a mentor who helped guide her through life’s challenges during high school. Here's Milexy's story in her own words:
When I was a sophomore, I joined not knowing that this decision would change my next three years in high school. I am a shy and introverted person. I don't usually talk to people much but volunteering with many people and going and seeing many places helped me with my shyness so I could make new friendships.
When I volunteer, I find myself in situations where I have to interact with other people, which is perfect for improving my social skills. Plus, everyone is there for a common cause, so there's already something to talk about. It's like a safe space to try to be more outgoing and, before I know it, I'll be making friends and feeling more confident. It's not only about giving back to the community but also about growing as a person.
I would also like to thank my CIS Site Coordinator Ms. Pérez. She has been a great help to me during my high school years whenever I had a question or a problem. She was always there to help me or listen to me in whatever I needed and I will never forget what CIS and Ms. Pérez did for me.
