Current trends in public schools are deeply troubling: enrollment declines of more than one million students, chronic absenteeism levels of almost 15 million students, engagement levels at all-time lows, and more. But at CIS, these trends only strengthen our resolve to deepen our impact through our proven model of integrated student supports (ISS). The evidence is clear: with ISS, students improve their engagement, attendance, behavior, well-being and graduation rates.

Esteban on Why Being Present Matters

“If it wasn’t for CIS, I would not be walking that stage,” Esteban, 18, admitted. “School was never really my thing.”

Like many students, Esteban’s struggles extended beyond the classroom.

That’s when CIS Site Coordinator Marco stepped in. Recognizing the impact of external factors on Esteban's academic performance, Marco had a heart-to-heart conversation with him, offering support and empathy.

Learn How We Are Present for Students

CIS has taken many things off the plate of teachers. Our staff and students now have the resources we need to teach and learn.
Public School Teacher
That’s what we need in our schools, every single day. People to champion for kids. To believe in them on days when they don’t believe in themselves. And for them to see that there is a future where they’re in a position where they can do the same for those that come behind them. That’s the power of public education. That’s the power of what CIS does.
Dr. Angélica Ramsey Superintendent, Forth Worth ISD
Like so many students, I needed support that that public school system was not fully equipped to provide. Now I get to help students follow their dreams, just like someone helped me!
Anahi Ibarra Alumna and Site Coordinator, CIS of Los Angeles
CIS Site Coordinator James Gibson helped us understand the CIS model so that we could use it to help Bellshire Elementary. It’s all about building relationships with parents, students, staff, and the community while also finding community resources and organizations to plug into schools. And that’s really what we needed.
Donald Black Principal, Bellshire Elementary School in Tennessee
I consider what we do to kind of bring parents back into school, as helping and aiding in the positive climate and culture. Any opportunity that we can try to bring and engage the parents, we do try to make that a priority.
Jenesis Gibson, LPC-S Vice President of Children and Family Services, Volunteers of America North Louisiana (CIS' longest-standing licensed partnership)

Community Matters

This year’s Community Matters Report dives into the state of our public schools. It also includes the impact our ISS model has on the 3,460 schools we are working with across the country, and a call to action for everyone working to fulfill the promise of public education in America.
