Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation's largest dropout prevention organization. Communities In Schools champions the connection of needed community resources with schools to help students successfully learn, remain in school and prepare for life.

Programs

After School Tutoring at Moravian Falls Community Learning Center 

 Communities In Schools  partners with the Moravian Falls Learning Center to provide after school tutoring services on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.  Tutoring is available for 3rd-5th graders from Moravian Falls Elementary School and a healthy snack is provided. 

Dance

DanCIS is an experience unlike any other dance program. Dance wear, shoes, and class instruction are provided for all students free of charge.  DanCIS students are exposed to a wide variety of dances, cultures, and opportunities to choreograph and create their own dances. DanCIS gives students a place to have fun, get fit, and grow. We are currently seeking donations for mats and other equipment. Please visit the DanCIS website for more information.

Friends of Youth

Friends of Youth is a one-on-one mentoring program for 4th through 8th graders. Volunteer mentors spend 2-4 hours a week with a child doing normal everyday activities. Monthly activities are also planned for all youth and mentors to enjoy as a group. Activities are always fun, educational, social and cultural.

Dig It

A program made possible with support from The Law Offices of Timothy Welborn for The Friends of Youth. A community garden allows youth to dig into a new lifestyle by learning how to grow their own food. This program also promotes healthy eating habits and physical activity.

Girl Power

Girl Power is a weekly program for 6th grade girls that is offered at all four middle schools. This program focuses on building self-esteem and addressing issues that young girls face today.

Wise Guys & Smart Girls

A weekly teen pregnancy prevention program led by trained adult volunteers to encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

Lunch Buddies

Lunch Buddies is a mentoring program which focuses on children in kindergarten through 3rd grades. Volunteers spend one lunch period a week at the school of their choice eating lunch, building a special friendship and encouraging a child. The Lunch Buddy program is offered at various elementary school throughout Wilkes County.

New Century Scholars

This is a community partnership project in which scholarships to Wilkes Community College are awarded to 6th grade students. They receive these scholarships upon graduation from high school. Partners in the efforts are: CIS, Wilkes Community College, Wilkes Chamber of Commerce Education Improvement Committee and local businesses. Businesses, individuals, and church or civic groups sponsor students with a $1000 tax-deductible contribution. CIS tracks the students progress and plans service learning projects for them annually.Twenty-four additional youth are awarded annually with scholarships.

Peer Helper/Peer Mediator

Students in middle and high schools are trained in life skills to aid their peers in conflict resolution and listening to issues that arise in student life.

Sight for Students

Qualified students receive free eye exams and eye glasses through a national vision service plan partnership. This program is for low income students under age 18 without Medicaid or vision insurance. Students may be referred by anyone.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month in May and Let’s Talk Month in October create community awareness on issues surrounding teen pregnancy and encourages parent/child communication regrading sexuality.

Unsung Hero Awards

Every teacher in the Wilkes County Schools System chooses one student in their classes to receive this award for honesty and hard work. This is a joint effort with the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce. Community members present the awards to students at each school’s annual awards assemblies. The children receive a certificate and a T-shirt provided through the Chamber and Chamber members.

More than 250 students in Wilkes County are honored annually with this award!
