Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation's largest dropout prevention organization. Communities In Schools champions the connection of needed community resources with schools to help students successfully learn, remain in school and prepare for life.

Get Involved

Communities In Schools offers in-school mentoring and tutoring, supportive guidance to students and parents, transportation, school uniforms and supplies, referrals to community agencies and assistance with “emergency” clothing for students at the elementary schools. We also assist with medications when there are no other resources available.

SCHOOL TOOLS CAMPAIGN FOR COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF ROWAN COUNTY

Communities In Schools along with WSOC TV channel 9 and their Family Focus Partners begin collecting School Supplies for needy children August 1st and ends August 31st. Collection barrels are placed in each Food Lion Store in Rowan County and patrons can donate school supplies, Communities In Schools staff and volunteers collect the supplies weekly and place in storage (location last year was one of the Trinity Oaks Duplexes).

The supplies are gathered, sorted and bagged to give to Rowan County Children the Saturday before school starts in August. The supplies collected after that date are given to Rowan Salisbury Schools to distribute to children who show up for school without needed supplies. Last year 07-08 school year, over 2,300 students received school supplies and over 100 received backpacks.

All items collected in Rowan County stay in Rowan County.

How to get involved:

• Sponsor a school supply collection
• Sponsor a backpack collection
• Sponsor a School Uniform drive
• Empty barrel at a Food Lion Store (once a week)
• Sort and bag supplies (once a week)
• Help with distribution of supplies to children (August 23rd)
• Help collect supplies and give out Ballgame Tickets at Intimidators game (August 9th)
• Collect supplies from Rowan County Post Offices (Saturday in August date TBA)
